The 40 Things Journey

40 Things to Do in Corpus Christi is an award-winning* look at the best Things to Do in the best city in America.

In 2010, local troublemaker Joe Hilliard set out to do 40 Things in and around Corpus Christi that he had never done before to test the locals’ oft-repeated theory that ‘There’s nothing to do in Corpus Christi.’ He made a list and started a Facebook page that racked up over 1,000 fans in its first week.  The local newspaper hired Joe to chronicle the year-long journey in a weekly column, that eventually won the paper’s own ‘Best of the Best’ award for local columnist.

20 More Things II
20 More Things III
20 More Things IV
He completed those original 40 Things and had one of the most exciting local years of his life. Nothing to do in Corpus Christi? Get out of town!

Since then, the journey has continued as we find the best Things to Do in Corpus Christi, comment on our local scene and quality-of life, and explore this vibrant city’s attitude toward itself.
Why, with so many Things to Do, does a population (generally speaking) believe or say the opposite?

Even on its surface, ‘There’s nothing to do in Corpus Christi,’ makes no sense. There are bars, movie theaters, restaurants, a beach, a bayfront, farmers’ markets and quick access to fishing, hunting, and water sports. Everyone knows about The Hooks and most know about the Rayz. There’s clearly ‘stuff to do’.  When you visit us you’ll notice the obvious: our beaches, The Texas State AquariumThe USS Lexington parked right off our bayfront, Corpus Christi Hooks baseball, the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, and Hurricane Alley Water Park. And these are just the highlights on the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau pamphlet.

So when people say there’s nothing to do, what do they really mean? There’s not as much to do as larger cities? There aren’t things that they subjectively like to do? What kinds of things do they want to do that they can’t do here? Are they doing the things there are to do?

It’s 40 Things, a city’s weirdest guide to finding out everyThing there is to do.

The Original 40 Things

In 2010 we set out to do 40 Things in Corpus Christi that we had never done. It was a social experiment created to quiet local naysayers who routinely poop on the city they choose to live in. “There’s nothing to do in Corpus Christi,” they blindly moan. Pshhhhh. Here is that first year’s list. At year’s end, we pressed on trying out 20 more new Things a year.

This is not a list of the BEST Things to Do in Corpus Christi (that list is coming soon); this is the list of the 40 Things we’d never done. By being purposeful and committing to having fun adventures, 2010 was one of the best years of our lives.

We love where we live and want to share it with you.
